Rohitakarishta is the traditional Ayurvedic formulation containing self-generated alcohol. Rohitakarishta was formulated by decoction of herbs in boiling water and has been standardized by physicochemical parameters and WHO guidelines. The amount of total phenols was analyzed by using Folin-Ciocalteau assay and was found to be 1.3 g/100 ml. The amounts of total flavonoid were analysed using aluminium chloride calorimetric assay, was found to be 0.85 g/100 ml. Free radical scavenging activity evaluated using 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) was found to be 6.5 µg/ml. The application of present study may play significant role in deciding the identity, purity and quality of the Rohitakarishta formulation. Self-generated alcohol was observed to be 5.2%, the availability of alcohol in formulation improves quality, potency, stability and shows faster absorption without any side effects.
